Motorcycle Gear Review

Lee Parks ‘Deer Tours - Black’

These are Lee Parks ‘Deer Tours - Black’ gloves.

They are made out of deer skin which is softer and supposed to be more abrasion-resistant than cowhide (I hope I don’t find out). They say you can hand wash them and the leather will stay soft. They have extra leather on the palm and across the knuckles. A Velcro wrist strap will secure around the wrist.

I have used these gloves for about three months and I really like them. I was surprised to find out that even on mid-90 degree days they weren’t too hot. Usually gloves without ventilation holes or some synthetic material on the back are hot, but these weren’t. They are nice soft comfortable feel. The coolest I’ve road with them so far was in the 50’s and my hands weren’t cold.

They are a little plain looking but, seem to be made very well. I would definitely buy another pair. The only drawback is the price, as of 10/21/08 they were $79.95 at www.leeparksdesign.com

One thing that weighed heavy in my decision to purchase these gloves is that they are made in the USA. I think we should support US manufacturers, whenever we can.

I tried to give an accurate description of this item. I am not affiliated with Lee Parks in any way. This review is based on my opinion and not to be taken as fact.

Scorpion Hat Trick Mesh Jacket

I have used this jacket since Sept. ‘08. I think this is going to be a great product. To give a proper review, I would like to use it in each season. I’ve only put about a thousand miles on it, so far. Sometime around July of ‘09 I will do a full review on it.

To see more about the jacket, check out the videos below. I found these on YouTube.

Part 1

Shoei RF-1000

The Shoei RF-1000 (Camber - discontinued graphics) is a great helmet. I have put about 2000 miles on this helmet and am very satisfied it. This has to be the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn. With the plush interior and the light weight, riding all day is not a problem. Venting is excellent, with one in the chin and two in the forehead that channel the air out the two vents in the back. When you get a little warm and open the vents, you can literally, feel the stream of air moving  across the top of your head. The helmet is fairly quiet. I do get a little wind noise, but might be able to eliminate some of it by adjusting the shield to fit tighter against the rubber seal. Another great feature is the ability to remove the shield without any tools.

With three rides at around 400 miles, this helmet was just as comfortable at the end of each ride as it was in the beginning.

On another note, the Shoei RF-1000 looks as good as it feels. Would I buy another one? Absolutely!

Before you purchase a helmet, you should try it on to be sure of proper fit. Even helmets of the same model and same size sometimes fit differently.

WindTech Shellaclava

When I opened the garage door, I seen a few snow flurries. What was I thinking? It was 28 degrees with 15 - 20 mph winds. I'm taking the FJR in for a recall on the ignition switch, so I figure what better day to test the 'WindTech Shellaclava' from TurtleFur. The ride was about 17 miles with speeds up to 70 mph.

The WindTech Shellaclava is an under helmet accessory, designed to keep your neck and chin warm on those cold rides. Believe me when I tell you, it does just that. I was completely comfortable while wearing it and isn't comfort what it is all about. It is big enough you can move it to where you need the protection from the wind, but not too big where it feels bulky.

Would I buy another one? Absolutely!

TechSox

The TechSox Motorcycle socks are manufactured by a Canadian owned company called Tech Sox. We tested the Boot Cut version designed specifically for motorcycle cruising and touring. They claim the socks will keep you warmer in cool weather and cooler in warm weather. They also claim the socks will keep your feet dry.

My finding is a little different. The socks were tested in various temperatures, ranging from mid 40’s to lower 90’s. I will say they are a comfortable pair of socks. They may keep my feet warmer than other socks I’ve worn, but I can’t say that for sure. My feet usually don’t get cold. The one thing that I found to be different than their claim was keeping my feet dry. I found my feet seem to sweat significantly more while wearing these socks than other socks I’ve worn.

These socks sold for $16.95 as of 1/31/10 at www.techsox.com. Would I buy another pair? Probably not.
